UK Tour guide, index

Nottingham is a large town (over 270,000 people) and an old one. The area was originally settled in Anglo Saxon times as long ago as 6c being the ham or village of the Snots people. It was captured by the Danes in 868 and recaptured by Edward the Elder in 918. It has a long significant history including important moments in the English civil war.. Over the last two centuries it has been a fairly prosperous town with a young population and a lively nightlife. T has a university, museums, football team and all the usual amenities of a large city. (It was known as Queen of the Midlands.) It is, of course, associated with the legend of Robin Hood which is covered on the next page.
