Southwark Cathedral Walking under London Bridge we enter the precints of Southwark Cathedral.... Southwark had been a flourishing settlement from Roman times and became a religious centre when the Bishop of Winchester set up a college for priests here in 852 (see Winchester Palace, next page) The Diocese of Southwark was formed in 1905 and St. Saviours and St. Mary Overie became a cathedral - a throne.
