Carnaby Street is
parallel with Regent Street a few yards east in the Soho
block, near to Oxford Street. Laid out in the 1680's the street became world famous after John Stephen and others opened colorful unisex clothes stores here in the late
50's. The street is an icon of the swinging sixties. It was also innovative in being one of the first city centre streets pedestrianised, a proposal put forward by Bill
Robins of Westminster City council.
