Royal Hospital -
Chelsea
Charles 11 founded
this hospital for veteran soldiers and commissioned Sir
Christopher Wren as architect. Work began in 1682 and in
1689 the first 476 pensioners were admitted. Constructed
around three courtyards the building remains largely
unchanged. The building houses many important works of art.
It is still a home for veterans, many of whom can be seen
walking around Chelsea in their traditional red and black
tunics. Since May 1913 it has been the site of the Chelsea
Flower Show.
