Covent Garden
This pastureland
belonging to the monastery was granted to the first Earl of
Bedford after the dissolution. It was the 5th Earl of
Bedford who started the market. Covent Garden is mainly
known for two things a) The opera, or the Royal Opera House
, the most luxurious theatre ever built in London when it
opened in 1732 and the fruit and veg (later flower too)
markets.
The markets grew and grew until they finally moved to a larger site in 1973. The piazza (more pics) have been tastefully converted into shops and cafes and the area pedestrian-ised. It really is a fun area with lots going on and by night it buzzes with the Rock Cafe and other clubs and cafes.
