Kensington
Kensington (Chenesit)
began in Anglo Saxon times as a farming settlement. During
the Norman conquest the De Vere family were holders of the
manor and remained so until the 16c. During the 1600's a
number of large mansions were built which had all the advantage of a country estate while being close the
metropolis of London. In 1689 the clean air and genteel
quality of the area prompted King William 111 to buy
Nottingham House and convert it into Kensington Palace. So
by the end of the 1600's it had become an elegant unhurried
place of around 1,000 people. It became known as the London County Village and with its genteel grace could still be
called that today. It became the "Royal Borough" as a result
of Queen Victoria's birth in Kensington Palace.
