Notting Hill Gate
Built on the Porto
Bello and Kensington Gravel Pit farms in the 19c Notting
Hill was a potentially volatile mix of rich and poor.
However, apart from some early race riots nearly forty years
ago, it has evolved into one of the most harmonious
cosmopolitan concoctions anywhere in the world. People there
are proud to say they get along. It is in fact an unusual
arty bohemian melting pot of rich and poor, black, white and
everything else, antiques and junk, innovative and social
projects. It was the birthplace of 'whole foods' in the U.K.
and host Europe's largest street carnival. It is a most
interesting place to visit.
