Oxford Street
Since Roman times
this has been a route west, or the way to Oxford. Building
development of the street began in 1739 and the character of
the street was that of entertainment halls. It was in the
late 19c that it became a shopping street.
Modern Oxford Street is a huge and long shopping artery, nearly two miles of continuous stores and in parts literally one department store after another. It is a busy street, virtually impossible to park and it is highly recommended to purchase a London Transport travel card, which is valid for multiple journeys on the busses and underground. The central line runs the length of Oxford Street as do over a dozen bus routes. With some exceptions the shopping merchandise is of cheap to medium range.
