Tour Monitor

A tailor from the Strand invested in lands around what is now Piccadilly Circus and he made his fortune from 'Picadils' - a form of stiff collar. Piccadilly is one of the two ancient highways going west out of London, although house building didn't commence until the 1600's. The street extends from Piccadilly Circus to Hyde Park with the court of St James and Green Park to the south and Mayfair to the north. It has some very rand houses along it, notably Aspley House. The Royal Academy of Arts is on the north side, about 150 yards from Piccadilly Circus and the Ritz Hotel is on the south side by Green Park.
