Shaftesbury Avenue -
upheaval and completion of building Regent Street it soon
became obvious that another route was needed to connect
Piccadilly to Charing Cross and this work (driving a road
through the slums of Soho) was undertaken by the
Metropolitan Board of Works whose general incompetence (they
ripped apart Piccadilly Circus to name one blunder) was investigated by a Royal Commission. The road was completed
in 1886 and between 1888 and 1907 six major theatres opened
making it the centre of London's theatres or 'Theatreland'
as it is know today.
