ELTHAM PALACE

Eltham was first inhabited as a royal residence in 1311 and frequented for the next four hundred years by successive monarchs, mainly for entertainment. As nearby Greenwich came more into vogue Eltham was largely abandoned and nearly went derelict until it was rescued and restored by the industrialist Courtauld family earlier this century. Today the palace is an intriguing mixture of medieval palace and high art deco fashion. It is managed by English Heritage and is open to the public. It has recently undergone an extensive refurbishment.
