Chelmsford Communities were settled around the River Chelmer (probably a Saxon name) more than 4,000 years ago and it had the great honour of bearing the Imperial Roman Prefix.The long history of this, the county town of Essex has ebbed and flowed. Marconi opened the worlds first radio factory here in 1899 and the tone was set for a town engaged in technology and light engineering.
