Cestrefeld (Roman for open field near the
camp) has been an important and bonefide market town since at least 1165. The town played an important role in the
battles of the 1200s and 1600s. Since the 18c it has been the commercial hub of North East Derbyshire with the huge
coal deposits in the region.Coal mining has declined
considerably and now engineering is the main stay of the
town, population now over 75000. Chesterfield is only 5 mins from the M1, 15mins by rail to sheffield, and 2 hours by
rail to London.
