Manchester
A Roman fort was established here in Mancenian in 79 AD but not a lot
happened in town until 1330 when Flemish immigrants started cotton
wool manufacture. The town went on to become the worlds most dynamic
cotton and textile centre, an incredible industrial centre.
Manchester occupies a plain that borders on the Pennines in the east.
and the upland spur of Rosendale in the north. It is connected to the
ocean, 35 miles away, via the Manchester Ship Canal. Greater
Manchester is made up of 10 districts with the industrial centres of
Salford and Trafford being the largest. It is governed by 144
councillors and returns 10 members to parliament. Apart from having a
large number of manufacturing industries Manchester is a banking
centre and hub of the northern economy and houses the Northern Stock
Exchange. It is a publishing centre and prints many northern editions
of national daily papers.
