New Forest
Although a forest existed before 1079 William 1 renamed it
'New' for legal reasons in order that he could hunt freely
in it. Ironically his descendent William Rufus was killed
there by his own arrow whilst hunting. Nowadays it is a
93,000 acre reserve, managed by the Forestry Commission, which has a complete spectrum of heathland flora and fauna. It has rare species of plant, birds and insects and the
famous 'New Forest Pony', a breed in itself, roam freely.
