On the Kennet river, near the confluence with the Thames, 38 miles south west of London lies the Berkshire town of Reading. It has a population of over 120,000. While surrounded by miles of modern industrial parks the town has actually a long history. It was occupied by Danes in 871. Henry 1 (who is buried here) founded an abbey which became an important centre where monarchs came and parliaments met. It was a rich abbey, much coveted by Henry V111 who dissolved it and hanged the abbot. - More info coming soon - See Reading Gaol
